Our seasonal outside workers perform diversified manual work entailing physical effort and agility in performing semi-skilled construction and maintenance tasks for the Parks Operations department.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of methods, practices, and/or procedures related to parks maintenance and construction activities. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work, as well as safe work procedures, practices, methods, and materials involved in the work performed.
  • Knowledge of municipal streets and traffic routes.
  • Skill in the care and operation of a variety of power and hand tools, materials, and equipment used in the work. Ability to provide customer service to internal and external clients.
  • Ability to drive in non-standard areas and to safely maneuver vehicle under non-standard driving conditions.
  • Ability to plan and organize own workload and the ability to initiate operational adjustments based on service needs. Ability to work with others and be able to use common courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in maintaining working relationships.
  • Ability to carry out oral or written instruction, take direction from a supervisor, and exercise some independent judgement and action in processing assignments.
  • Ability to interact effectively and courteously with the public and project a positive image of the City at all times Must be able to lift, carry and push in excess of 20kg (45 lbs) on a regular and/or repetitive basis.
  • Ability to work shift work including weekends.
  • Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check.

Qualifications and Experience:
Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by education, training, and/or experience in Horticulture, Arboriculture, Landscape Construction, Turf Management, Irrigation and other related asset management activities, such as washroom maintenance, plus a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence or higher with a clean driver’s abstract.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Red Seal Horticulturist
  • ISA Arborist Certification
  • Pesticide Applicators Licence

Working Conditions:

  • Routine light and heavy physical effort and capability is required to carry out duties, including regular and/or repetitive lifting of up to 20kg (45lbs).
  • Work requires regular exposure to traffic, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes, noise, toxic chemicals, construction sites, excavations, and heavy equipment.
  • Work may also be require exposure to minor and/or major disagreeable conditions or hazards including animal feces, needles/sharps, hazardous waste, and insects.
  • Work is performed in all weather conditions.

Pay Range/Rate: $29.49 per hour
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, with possibility for weekend shifts. (Compressed Work Week).
