Site: Toronto General Hospital
Department:  Home  Hemodialysis Program
Reports to:  Nurse Manager
Salary Range:  $33.56 to $48.05 per hour
(Start rate: determined in accordance with collective agreement requirements)
Hours:  37.50 Hours/Week – Days, Monday to Friday

Home Hemodialysis Unit

Home hemodialysis allows nephrology patients to undergo dialysis treatment at home. Patients connnect themselves with tubing to the dialysis machine.

There are two kinds of home hemodialysis:

  • Intermittent dialysis: patients dialyze at home every other day
  • Nocturnal dialysis: patients dialyze overnight, while they sleep

Our services:

  • Provide a minimum of a six-week one- on-one training program to educate patients and family members about home hemodialysis, including how to insert needles, operate machinery, disinfect equipment and monitor water treatment systems
  • Operate a weekly clinic staffed by nephrologists, to provide patient check-ups as needed (patients visit on an occasional basis, usually every 4-6 weeks)
  • Provide nephrology support to Dialysis Management Clinic and self-care dialysis patients
  • Home visits (by nurses and technologists)

As a member of the UHN and the Nursing Multi-disciplinary Team, the REGISTERED NURSE practices in accordance with relevant legislation/standards, meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the profession. The principal responsibilities include: applying knowledge of nursing science, theory, skill and critical decision making in the provision of compassionate, collaborative and competent care in accordance with the UHN Professional Practice Model for Nursing and the mission and vision of nursing at the UHN; ensuring practice is consistent with professional standards and the ethical framework as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the UHN policy and procedure; demonstrating commitment to professional life-long learning by participating in continuing education activities to meet the needs of the patient population served and the standards of the profession.


  • Current Registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • BSc.N. preferred
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) certification
  • Minimum one (1) year Medical/Surgical experience
  • Completion of the Nephrology certificate or CNeph C.
  • Must have a minimum five (5) years in center Hemodialysis expertise
  • Current Home Hemodialysis teaching experience essential
  • Certificate in Methods of Adult Education preferred
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills 
  • Exceptional decision making and problem solving skills
  • Machine and water treatment expertise
  • Family training experience
  • Peritoneal Dialysis Experience preferred
  • Experience starting IV’s and doing venipunctures
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Hemodialysis experience with Fresenius and Belco equipment required
  • Second language preferred
  • Valid Driver’s License required
