1 temporary full-time position for 4 months, commencing in May 2019, intended specifically for students currently enrolled in full-time in a statistics, mathematics, economics or related post-secondary graduate degree program


The Urban Form and Corporate Strategic Development (UFCSD) Department helps the City realize its vision of safe, healthy, attractive, vibrant and sustainable communities. The department interacts with the public by processing building and development permit applications and providing advice and information on planning processes. The Project and Research Graduate Summer Student is responsible for supporting a number of branch and section initiatives that will enable UFCSD to be more effective and efficient. Working within the Business Performance Section of Urban Form and Corporate Strategic Development Department, the Project and Research Graduate Summer Student’s main areas of focus will be to review and revise the current revenue forecasting model for the Planning and Development Business Model and support Cost of Service work. This work will allow the department to better align resources with customer needs.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Research and develop an economic forecasting model that can analyze the impact of changes in external economic factors such as inflation rate, consumer price index (CPI) Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Oil/Gas prices changes, population changes and Foreign Exchange Rates.

  • Research, collect and analyze background material, data and best practices for the  design, development and implementation of the revenue forecasting model, and Cost of Service Study

  • Assist in conducting analytics on departmental financial processes to optimize business operations

  • Contribute to project success through best practices research, planning assistance, and contribution to the implementation of Section and Branch initiatives that are rooted in the achievement of department outcomes

  • Develop options and recommend strategies to achieve results with optimal resource utilization (labour and capital)

  • Monitor transformative business process projects through frequent and ongoing interaction with various levels of leaders in the Section, Branch and Department

  • Prepare and assist in the delivery of presentations in a manner appropriate to the intended audience

  • Facilitate the identification, investigation and development of solutions to recurring systemic issues or areas of inefficiencies

  • Make recommendations for ongoing continuous improvement of the programs

  • Currently enrolled full-time in a statistics, mathematics, economics or related post-secondary graduate degree program

  • Experience or demonstrated ability with forecasting and statistical methods, such as ARIMA, Time Series and Panelled Data Analysis and other regression techniques

  • Ability to probe, investigate and analyze issues to understand the underlying gap

  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office suite and Google Apps

  • Experience using regression software such as R-programming, SAS, SPSS

  • Demonstrated ability to apply strategic and critical thinking to business analysis and decision making

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to maintain strong working relationships

  • Demonstrated ability to express ideas and concepts effectively and adjust communication style based on the audience

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present technical briefs and reports

  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in the absence of a supervisor

  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills

  • Familiarity with performance measurement reporting tools, including terminology and approach is an asset

  • Experience with Tableau, Oracle, SQL is considered as an asset

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday


Salary Range: $19.749 - $25.135 (Hourly)
