We are looking for a regular full-time Plumbing and Gas Inspector 2 to join our Development Services team. This is supervisory technical work in planning and directing the plumbing and gas fitting inspectional program. The incumbent is responsible for enforcing appropriate By-Laws, Codes, Regulations and Acts pertaining to all plumbing, sewer, drainage, gas, sprinkler, forced air heating, hydronic heating installation and repairs undertaken by homeowners, contractors, tradesmen and others. Except for policy matters, the Plumbing and Gas Inspector 2 is responsible for the overall efficiency of the plumbing and gas inspection program with work performance being evaluated by the Chief Building Inspector. The incumbent provides guidance and assistance to Plumbing and Gas Inspector 1's on the more complex and controversial aspect of their work.

The successful applicant will possess:

  • A thorough knowledge of plumbing, sewer, gas fitting, drainage, sprinkler, forced air heating and hydronic heating standards, codes, regulations and by-laws related thereto;
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing and gas fitting trades;
  • Sound knowledge and experience dealing with groundwater, interflow and infiltration issues; and be well versed in best practices regarding integrated stormwater management and have the ability to critically review professional designs alternative drainage systems;
  • Considerable knowledge of labour and material costs;
  • The ability to direct an effective inspectional and enforcement programme and plan and supervise the work of inspectional staff;
  • The ability to enforce regulations firmly, tactfully and with full authority and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contactors, the public and external agencies;
  • The ability to work with minimum supervision;
  • The ability to interpret and verify plans and specifications, estimate labour and material costs and recognize technical requirements and suggest and enforce changes or corrections as required;
  • The ability to collect and present evidence in Court, supervise the preparation and maintenance of the records, reports and correspondence;
  • The ability to prepare letters and reports and be competent with computer applications such as MS Word, EnerGov permit system, MS Outlook, PC Docs, etc;
  • A commitment to providing excellence in public service both personally and as a member of the Planning, Permit and Bylaw Division;
  • A commitment to professional development.


Qualifications:
Completion of Grade 12; along with an apprenticeship in the plumbing trade, and considerable related experience preferably as a Plumbing and Gas Inspector 1. Provincial Gas Fitters Licence, TECA certificate, B.O.A.B.C. member in good standing with a Level II in Plumbing and a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence are required. Preference will be given to applicants with good knowledge and experience in Fire Sprinkler systems.

The pay range for this unionized position is $43.04 - $50.85 per hour based on a 35-hour work week, with a comprehensive benefits plan, 3 weeks of vacation to start, and earned time off opportunities.
