Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards has proudly been selected under the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) to be Canada’s long-term partner for the building of Non-Combat vessels. This multi-billion dollar program will create stable work over the next decade and beyond, and see the construction of up to 17 ships to start. In addition, Seaspan has invested $200 million into its shipyard facilities to support this. Construction began in October 2012 and has resulted in the completion of four new fabrication buildings, a 300-ton shipbuilding gantry crane and load-out pier.

The Opportunity

The Horizontal Engineering Program Plan (HEPP) is in place at Vancouver Shipyards to develop the critical systems, processes, procedures and standards necessary to enable a cost-effective design and construction strategy. The successful applicant will work within the Engineering team, directly supporting the HEPP Project Manager and the Project Engineer. The internship will provide exposure to various areas of engineering on one of the largest shipbuilding programs of our time. In this role, you will provide day-to-day support to: 

  • Compile and organize Vendor Furnished Information (VFI) required for various parts and equipment.
  • Develop material specifications (data sheets) to support Seaspan material strategies and requirements.
  • Develop and/or update Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) documents related to the VFI process under direct supervision of the project engineer.
  • Support the development of training material related to VFI process for the engineering and supply chain teams.
  • Provide support to the Technical HEPP Project Manager and the Project Engineer to successfully complete and deliver the project.

In order to be considered for this internship, you will be enrolled in either 2nd or 3rd year of an engineering program. Students must also have a strong interest in a heavy manufacturing or marine environment. In addition you should have:

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and engineering skills through exposure to class projects or co-op terms.
  • Above average analytical skills to gather and analyze/synthesise data
  • Excellent computer skills including Excel/Word/ PowerPoint/Visio
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organization skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and superior time management skills
  • Work well under pressure and has the ability to meet strict, daily deadlines
