This multi-billion dollar program will create stable work over the next decade and beyond, and see the construction of up to 17 ships to start. In addition, Seaspan has invested $200 million into its shipyard facilities to support this. Construction began in October 2012 and has resulted in the completion of four new fabrication buildings, a 300-ton shipbuilding gantry crane and load-out pier.

The Opportunity

The Intern, Project Engineering will support the project engineering function for science vessels within the technical department. The technical department operates out of thin North Vancouver and is responsible for the design and construction of the Offshore Fisheries Science Vessel (OFSV), and Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel (OOSV) for the Canadian Coast Guard. The Intern, Project Engineering, will support the Deputy Project Engineer, Project Engineer, and Engineering Managers with the management of Vancouver Shipyards (VSY) and major subcontractors from an engineering, and system design integration perspective. The internship will provide exposure to various areas of complex project management, as part of one of the largest shipbuilding programs in the world. The role provides a holistic project view to support the technical design team to be completely integrated in to the project as a whole. In this role you will provide day-to-day support to:

  • Collect and analyze data, and develop management reports.
  • Track open issues and actions and ensure timely resolution.
  • Review design documents to ensure contract compliance.
  • Support the development and maintenance of interface control documents.
  • Support to proposal and process development.
  • Provide support to the Science Vessels Project Engineering team, as required, to drive program delivery.
    • Prepare meeting agendas and minutes
    • Represent Project Engineering in sub-IPT, 3D modeling, Change Control meetings, and report back to the project engineer.
    • Liaise and coordinate with various engineering and project functions.

In order to be considered for this internship, you will need to be enrolled in either 3rd or 4th year of an engineering program. Students must also have a strong interest in a heavy manufacturing or marine environment. In addition you will have:

  • Demonstrated project knowledge and skills through exposure to class projects or co-op terms.
  • Above average analytical skills to gather and analyze/synthesize data.
  • Excellent computer skills including Excel/Word/PowerPoint/Visio.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organization skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work independently with minimal supervision and superior time management skills.
  • Work efficiently under pressure and has the ability to meet strict, daily deadlines.
    • Demonstrate sense of responsibility and accountability
