Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards has proudly been selected under the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) to be Canada’s long-term partner for the building of Non-Combat vessels. This multi-billion dollar program will create stable work over the next decade and beyond, and see the construction of up to 17 ships to start. In addition, Seaspan has invested $200 million into its shipyard facilities to support this. Construction began in October 2012 and has resulted in the completion of four new fabrication buildings, a 300-ton shipbuilding gantry crane and load-out pier.

The Opportunity

The successful applicant for this internship will work within the Procurement Team at Vancouver Shipyards and have exposure to a wide range of responsibilities within our procurement and supply chain operations. In this role, you will be involved in the following day-to-day tasks:

  • Reviewing all Request for Proposal (RFP) bid submissions and compiling the reasons why bidders have been rejected from the bid process (i.e. non-compliance).
  • Identifying potential supplier portal improvements and working with corporate office to implement agreed to changes.
  • Working with Seaspan’s suppliers to update supplier information.
  • Reviewing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and presenting summary reports to Purchasers.
  • Identifying potential cost leveraging opportunities within the Procurement Department.
  • Working with Engineering Department to identify opportunities to standardize the materials used in the construction of ships.

To be considered for this internship, you must be a current business student with previous experience in procurement and/or supply chain office environment. Applicants must also have completed a minimum of two co-op terms and have a strong interest in heavy manufacturing environments.

In addition you should have:

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to see “the big picture”
  • Detail-oriented and thorough.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage time effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and people skills.
  • Solution-driven attitude.
  • Work well under pressure and the ability to meet strict, daily deadlines.
