The Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) is a thriving community of 80,000+ situated on the southern part of Vancouver Island. The Cowichan Valley offers a warm climate, affordable housing, with numerous parks, and recreational, cultural, and social opportunities.

The CVRD is seeking a Facilities Coordinator for the West Cowichan location.  This position is responsible for the facility operation and maintenance of the Cowichan Lake Recreation facilities. This position works in an administrative, technical, and management capacity in carrying out the operation of facilities, equipment and grounds maintenance.

Secondary school graduation or the equivalent, and completion of a two year diploma from a recognized technical institute in structural engineering, mechanical technology, or a related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Five (5) years of experience in facility maintenance/operations/ grounds capacity and a minimum of five (5) years of experience at middle management/supervisor level is required. Required is: a valid class 5 BC Driver’s License; First Aid Level 1 with CPR and WHMIS certificates; British Columbia Refrigeration Operator Certificate of Competency; Building Service Worker Certificate; Arena and Curling Ice Maker 1 and 2; and, a satisfactory police information check and driver’s abstract. A building trade ticket would be an asset.

Experience is required in: design and building construction; physical and mechanical aspects of building operations and maintenance  in recreation facilities including ice arenas, curling rinks, auditoriums, and grounds/sportscomplex; managing, training and scheduling operations staff; and, composing letters, memos and staff reports.

Working knowledge is required of ice arena operations including ice making, resurfacing and the equipment and refrigeration systems used.  Knowledge is required of: supervisory practices/techniques; local government activities; methods, materials and equipment used in building construction; building and equipment maintenance and cleaning routines; HVAC units; hot water boilers; fire suppression systems, intrusion and gas alarm systems; and other related computer systems; OH&S regulations/legislation and procedures relating to the facility; administrative responsibilities and processes for procurement of supplies and services; human resource and payroll requirements regarding staffing, scheduling and, the purpose of a collective agreement and how to interpret negotiated language; financial reporting and budgeting. General knowledge is required: of mechanical, electrical and plumbing fields; and, the maintenance/repair of vehicles and equipment.

The successful candidate possesses the ability to: analyze and understand the  work required on the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems; lead, motivate, empower and supervise a team of employees respectfully and proactively; develop and analyze concepts and strategies, problem solve, establish goals/priorities; apply effective organizational skills to prioritize and manage a variety of activities with multiple deadlines to completion; establish and maintain courteous, tactful, diplomatic working relationships; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; and to proficiently use a PC in a Windows environment and Microsoft Office software.

This Exempt position is full time and due to the operational work will be required to work some evenings and weekends.  This position is eligible for flex time and includes a competitive benefit package including extended health/dental, vacation, and pension.
