Salary:$65,535 - $81,000(based on experience and competencies)

The Peter Munk Cardiac Centre (PMCC) was created from one of the largest monetary gifts ever made by the Munk Family. As a part of the PMCC strategic plan, we have made strong investments in bioinformatics, computational analytics and artificial intelligence approaches to improve ongoing world-class research in basic science, Precision Medicine and population health for patients with cardiovascular disease. The Peter Munk Centre for Systems Medicine will deploy a computational approach to solve important basic science and clinical questions based on "big data", together with leading computational labs.  

We are seeking highly qualified candidates for a data engineer position. Under supervision of the Digital Cardiovascular Health Platform (DCHP) leadership, the data engineer’s primary responsibilities are the extraction of data from the cardiovascular data lake, augmentation and validation of clinical patient data, and preparation of data exports as required. As a member of the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre DCHP team, the successful applicant will have daily interactions with a dynamic community of developers, analysts, statisticians, data scientists, scientists and clinicians focussed on improving care for cardiac patients at the University of Toronto and world-wide.  

Here’s what you’ll get to do:

  • Extraction of data from medical records and input into shared databases.
  • Oversee data quality monitoring, including processing, management and cleaning.
  • Abstracting and coding of medical records.
  • Query and integrate data from various sources for analysis, clean and recode data as needed.
  • Develop new data processing routines and new data visualization tools.
  • Preparation of data summary for research and/or quality improvement reports.
  • Produce basic statistics (descriptive statistics, group comparisons, basic regressions)
  • Content expertise on cardiovascular disease a definite asset
  • Assist with data harvesting and integration from collaborating institutions.
  • Provide support to data managers and data clerks using/providing DCHP resources.
  • Participate and contribute to machine-learning research.
  • Assist and mentor students, trainees, etc with data access
  • Attend relevant meetings, courses or workshops as needed.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree is required.
  • Specialization in computer science or bioinformatics preferred.
  • At least 1 undergraduate-level course in statistics is required.
  • 2 years of experience working in a data manager, data analyst role or equivalent role.
  • Good working knowledge of clinical informatics systems.
  • Excellent proficient with Microsoft Office applications (particularly Excel and Access
  • Knowledge of a statistical programming language (R, Python, SAS) and/or Golang a definite asset
  • Knowledge of FHIR/HL7 indexing a definite asset (training can be provided)
  • Demonstrated creativity and latitude in problem solving. This includes the ability prioritize and execute multiple competing tasks.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a diverse team environment.
